Sketching a logo should be quick. It's prior to design and several iterations may be required. Sketch captures the essence with a minimal or fast representation of the ideas to be presented.

The work would be given to a more skilled designer at the next stage, and serve as a more robust language for communication than spoken/written language alone. If it costs $30 to develop a sketch, vs. an hour of your time to write a detailed description, then it's likely a win!
